I am the Resonant Cavity
Rocket
School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts
December 2004
Duration: 30 minutes
In an exploration of sound and its relation to our bodies and memory as well as a homage to the likes of Carolee Schneeman and other feminist performance artists of the 1970's: I inserted one end of eight ten-foot lengths of latex tubing into my vagina, five of the other ends went to my mouth, the other three extended out from my body to the audience. I spoke through the tubing, the sound resonated in my vagina and came out through the other tubes, which the audience then picked up and listened through. My voice and source for communication is then transformed through the part of my body that is historically considered the site for my classification as "woman". |
