Unnatural Territory
A 3'x6' sign mounted on the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, Key West, FL January 2010
Unnatural Territory is an advertizement for a ficticous new landmass to be constructed off the coast of Key West. When people inquire by calling the number they heard a recording with a radio documentarian speaking the follow text:
The beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park was created in 1965 from material dredged from the shipping channel off the coast of Key West. Many of the keys have been sculpted over the years using this same technique. The new 100-acre extension of Key West follows in this long tradition of dredge and fill to create and transform land and shorelines into uniquely human made and human owned space.
We are no longer bound to the limits of our boarders. With modern technology and sensitivity to the local ecosystem we can create the land we most desire; complete with an array of natural resources suited for practical needs and human enjoyment. The ocean, which covers roughly 70% of the earth’s surface is highly under utilized space. We offer a green solution: material that would otherwise be discarded from maintaining local shipping channels can be recycled in the creation of the New Pristine Florida. |
